Representative from California wants soldiers to receive at least minimum wage.
Representative Mike Garcia of California reintroduced a plan to ensure all members of the military are at least paid a minimum wage for their service, which would bring needed financial help to junior troops. Previously, the plan remained stagnant due to the Pentagon noting the plan did “not factor in additional compensation that troops already receive.”
Congressman Garcia hopes the revival of his proposal will be revisited this session. He would like the base pay to be set at $31,200 per year, which is equivalent to $15 an hour, 40 hours per week. Legislators have currently placed additional focus on the financial difficulties of junior enlisted, and the Pentagon is working to balance service members’ compensation while focusing on priorities such as training hours and modernizing present equipment.
